Last weekend we had this scenario:
Player hits ball into the dirt about two feet foul on the right field line. Ball bounces twice in foul territory but then bounces back into fair territory about twenty feet from home plate, where it bounces at least twice more and is played by the first baseman in fair territory between home and first base.
The umpire allowed the play to continue, as the ball was in FAIR territory in the infield, even though it bounced foul first. The runner was out at first (pitcher covered).
The question was whether the play should have been ruled foul. A check of the rule book seems to indicate that it was a CORRECT call, as the ball was in FAIR territory when played, prior to passing first base into the outfield. As I read the rule, ANY batted ball can bounce in foul territory then into fair territory where it may be played as a fair ball.
However, I could not find concrete concurrence. Does anyone know if this is the right call?

yes that stands as i understand it.
a batted ball that rolls from foul to fair is fair if and only if it has not passed first or third base....has not hit an obstruction in foul terrirtory....and was not touched by a player while in foul territory.... if any of those three things happened the ball is foul...
i believe this is right... Rob please correct me if this is incorrect. ;D

If the ball was not passed first or third base the ball is fair if it goes from foul to fair as long as it did not go from foul to fair past the bases. If the fielder had touched the ball in foul territory ( even if the player was in fair territory) the play is dead and it is a foul ball. It is where the ball is not where the player is. That is why you sometimes see players make contact with the ball while it is in foul territory so that the play is dead and it is a foul ball.

Yep, we found the answers to this one. I went to all of the sources I could find, and in every case (USSSA, ASA, and major league baseball), this would indeed be a FAIR BALL.
The rule books say the right call was made.
Chalk up one for the boys in blue!!!
